PBPK Finite dose of barium part 1

After being busy with my theses now I am able to back to here again. Previous posts have explained the single time dose of a toxic chemical entering the ingestion tract. So this time, I would like to explain about the finite dose of barium that enters the body. As we know on the previous post, the single dose is described and the dose, and now the dose is continously enters the body or digestion organs.

We will take Barium as an example. Barium (Ba) have acute toxic effects with a dose 0.2-0.5 gram ingested at any given time. The fatal dose is 1 gram of Ba. Barium has a role to inhibit the transfer of potassium across the body through the blood. If the potassium balance is not met, than we will lose necessary electrolyte.

The transfer from stomach to blood is instant relatie to the elimination rate. The toxic effects are a function of Ba concentration in blood which is 0.2 gram resulted from the rate of 0.04 gram/liter with human body blood is around 5 liter (0.04 gr/L x 5 L = 0.2 gr). The body eliminates barium via kidneys at a rate :

dBa/dt = k x [Ba Concentration] ; Ba = Ba concentration

k is known to be -0.007/minute = -0.4/hour

At this first time post, we will try to calculate the Ba concentration in blood associated with the fatal dose. We know that the fatal dose is 1 gr Ba in our body which contains 5 L blood. So the concentration is 1 gr/5 L blood = 0.2 gr Ba/liter
